Italian FWA (fixed wireless access) telecoms provider EOLO, has deployed what is claimed to be the first 5G standalone mmWave RAN (radio access network) in Europe, using equipment from Finnish vendor Nokia.

Mobile operator Vodafone, chipmaker Qualcomm and telecoms vendor Ericsson announced a demonstration of claimed benefits of Millimetre wave (mmWave) 5G technology through two trials recently conducted in the UK.

An Italian trial of 5G mmWave for fixed wireless has achieved a record 1Gbps over a distance of 6.5km.
